Summer at Passo del Tonale

In summer Passo del Tonale, at 1,883 metres, is the perfect place to escape the heat: fresh air, meadows, alpine lakes and the Presena Glacier above you. Between Trentino and Lombardy, in the heart of the Stelvio and Adamello parks, there is something for everyone: family walks, challenging hikes, First World War history, water sports and adrenaline.

Check the weather live on the webcams.

Hiking and trails

Trails for all levels start from the Pass, towards mountain huts, alpine pastures and small lakes. You will find routes and maps on the official Pontedilegno-Tonale website; for more demanding outings contact the mountain guides.

With children, at Valbiolo (2,250 m) you will find the Marmot Village: a play trail with slides, little huts, a tunnel like a marmot burrow and a water mill, free of charge. Before you go, check how to get there on the Val di Sole website: the Valbiolo chairlift is being renewed.

In the footsteps of the Great War

During the First World War the front line ran right here, between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire: trenches, forts and military villages can still be seen.

  • The Dead City (Città Morta): the remains of an Austro-Hungarian military village at about 2,500 metres. A fine loop starts from the Ospizio San Bartolomeo at the Pass, climbs Monte Tonale Orientale (2,696 m), descends to the Dead City and returns via the Val di Strino and Forte Zaccarana: about 11 km and 5 hours of walking, medium difficulty.
  • Forte Strino in Vermiglio, restored and turned into a First World War museum; in summer it also organises guided tours of the forts of the Tonale barrier.
  • Forte Zaccarana, built between 1908 and 1914 and recently restored.
  • The White War Museum in Temù, with finds from the Adamello front (visits by appointment).

Passo del Tonale is also the starting point of the Path of Peace (Sentiero della Pace), which follows the old front line across Trentino.

Climbing and via ferratas

  • Climbing crags: the Monticelli crag at Passo del Tonale (about 40 routes, from 4b to 8a); in Vermiglio the Croz dei Pozzi (20 routes, also suitable for children and beginners) and the Centrale crag. Info
  • Sentiero dei Fiori: the famous via ferrata at about 3,000 metres above the Pass, along First World War walkways, with two suspension bridges 55 and 75 metres long. It can be done from July to September in stable weather and requires experience and via ferrata equipment: if you are not experienced, go with a mountain guide.

Mountain biking and downhill

In summer the lifts also carry bikes: the Pontedilegno-Tonale Bike Park has 8 downhill and enduro trails with three starting points, through the woods of Ponte di Legno and Temù and on the “flow” trails across the meadows of Passo del Tonale. Full-face helmets and protective gear are compulsory. Info, maps and BIKEPass on the Bike Park website; for easier rides there are bike and e-bike rentals.

Rafting and hydrospeed on the Noce river

In Val di Sole the glacier-fed Noce river is one of the best in Italy for rafting; for even more excitement there is hydrospeed, with wetsuit, fins and river board. The season usually runs from May to September, always with expert guides. Rafting centres and booking.

Zip Line in Ponte di Legno

For thrill-seekers: in Ponte di Legno you can fly hanging from a cable for over 1,200 metres, with a drop of almost 250 metres, from the Casola chairlift area down to Valbione.

Coming soon

  • The Skywalk at Monticelli, near Passo Paradiso at 2,585 metres: a panoramic walkway with a glass floor and 360-degree views, expected by summer 2027.
  • New gondolas at Passo del Tonale (Valbiolo) and in Ponte di Legno.
  • The new thermal spa in Ponte di Legno, in Piazzale Europa between the old town and the slopes, designed by Archea Associati.
